Arlo Doorbell Camera – We liked the Arlo Video Doorbell’s clean design when it came to aesthetics. It was pill-shaped, with a black face and a white rim that was shiny. There was also a black rim option. We did a lot of research before making any purchases. Prior to installing the Arlo Video Doorbell, we were pleased to learn that it required an already-installed wired doorbell and chime setup.
We installed our Arlo Video Doorbell after purchasing it. That the battery wouldn’t run out was a big deal to us. Wiring made installation a bit more difficult, but that was a concession we were willing to accept.
Arlo Doorbell Camera Design
We liked the Arlo Video Doorbell’s overall design, but we were less than thrilled with its size. It was taller than most video doorbells we’ve seen at five inches tall, 1.7 inches wide, and one inch deep. In spite of this, it still maintained the sleek look we had hoped for, but it was also slightly bulky.
As a security measure, the Arlo Video Doorbell included a built-in siren, which was both convenient and useful for our home. It had tamper detection as well, so if anyone tried to move it, the alarm went off. Every time our Arlo Smart doorbell detected a person, pet, or package entering our home, we received an alert on our smartphone. We used the mobile app’s activity zones feature to narrow our doorbell’s focus area to our porch, where we typically only saw people and packages because this was a lot of notifications.
Designed to withstand extreme heat, cold, wind, and sun, Arlo’s video doorbell can withstand temperatures ranging from -4 to +113 degrees Fahrenheit. It performed well in the rain, but we were concerned about how it would fare in a harsher winter. In order to use the Arlo Video Doorbell, we had to connect it to the Arlo app via Wi-Fi. Our review of the Arlo Video Doorbell was complete after we had learned all we could about the product’s design.
Arlo Doorbell Camera Features
- Arlo Doorbell Camera Video
We found that the Arlo Video Doorbell performed better than the industry standard of 1080p HD during our video evaluation. There were 1536 by 1536 pixels of resolution available, which resulted in a very clear image. With HDR, the camera was able to capture images that would otherwise have been distorted by harsh sunlight. In contrast to the majority of video doorbells, Arlo’s had a 1:1 aspect ratio. This allowed us to see a large vertical area, from the guest’s face to any packages at their feet, clearly and without any additional effort.. The Arlo Video Doorbell also has the widest possible field of view, 180 degrees, as well as the ability to zoom in digitally 12 times.
- Arlo Doorbell Camera Audio
In addition to having a speaker and microphone, we agreed that two-way audio was an essential feature of any video doorbell. Using these tools, we were able to speak to anyone who was in front of our doorbell camera, whether it was a child returning from school or an Amazon delivery driver.
As a result of its two-way audio, the Arlo Video Doorbell made it easy for us to answer our door from wherever we were. For example, we were able to leave prerecorded messages for our guests, and they could leave messages for us. It was like having an answering service for the front door. We were excited to play around with this feature because it was absent from most video doorbells we tested. Even in the middle of the night, we were able to hear our visitors clearly and clearly record our daytime footage. Our pre-recorded message welcoming our guests to our home was also a hit with our guests.
- Arlo Doorbell Camera Vision at night
Without night vision, what good is a video doorbell? At night, the Arlo Video Doorbell had infrared LED sensors that allowed us to see clearly. During the winter, when the sun sets so early, we figured this feature would be especially helpful because of the number of visitors we received. We actually preferred infrared night vision over color night vision because it made the camera much less noticeable than the bright white spotlight required by color night vision..
- Arlo Doorbell Camera Storage
We were disappointed that the Arlo Video Doorbell lacked local storage, but Arlo still received points from us because they offered a week of free cloud storage. We had to upgrade to an Arlo Smart plan, which began at around $3 per month, in order to store our data in the cloud for a longer period of time.
When we signed up for Arlo Smart, we also received a three-month trial of Arlo Smart’s cloud storage, which included person detection. At just $2.99 per camera per month after three months, Arlo Smart was a great value compared to other security cameras.
Arlo Doorbell Camera Smart Platform Integration
We had a lot of fun using Alexa with the Arlo Video Doorbell because it is compatible with the voice assistant.
Demonstrate the Arlo Video Doorbell
- It’s possible to hide the footage from Arlo’s video doorbell
- Please display the most recent Arlo Video Doorbell motion.
- Using Google Assistant or Apple HomeKit with the doorbell would have been a hassle because it wasn’t compatible with either of those voice assistants.
Arlo Doorbell Camera AI
With this feature in mind, we can distinguish a person’s movement from the movement of pets, cars, and more with our Arlo Smart Video Doorbell. With person detection, we received only the most important alerts. When a car passed by our house, we didn’t have to deal with the annoying beeps that accompany it. Our free trial of Arlo Smart had come to an end, so we decided to pay for the service when it was no longer free.
Arlo’s pet or package detection was also available. We reasoned that the latter could be useful in informing a delivery person of where we want our packages placed. If you live in New York City, getting packages at home can be a gamble, so having the ability to speak directly with our delivery person made all the difference.
Wired doorbell and chime systems with 16-24 VAC and existing electrical wiring were required to use the Arlo Video Doorbell. Unlike other Arlo products, this one was up and running in less than ten minutes. After removing our old doorbell, we reattached the wires to the Arlo Video Doorbell. In order to avoid being electrocuted, we turned off our electricity before beginning this project.
Arlo’s mobile app walked us through the rest of the setup process, which included naming our doorbell and scanning a QR code from the app after we’d physically installed the Arlo Video Doorbell in our home. After that, the app took care of the rest.
Arlo Doorbell Camera App
It was easy to keep track of our camera’s settings, communicate with our guests through the Arlo app’s two-way audio, access cloud storage, and stream live video using the Arlo app. In the Google Play store, the app received a 3.7 out of five ratings, with over 60,000 votes, and in the Apple store, it received a four-star rating. The lack of a user-friendly interface was mentioned in a few reviews, despite the majority being positive. In addition, there was a general agreement that live content had a three-to-five-second lag. Despite the fact that we didn’t experience this delay ourselves, we thought it would be rather frustrating if we were trying to communicate in real-time.
Arlo Doorbell Camera Final Verdict
$149 seemed like a lot at first, but it was actually $50 less than the industry average for a video doorbell While some doorbells economized on features, the Arlo Video Doorbell didn’t. On top of Arlo Smart’s excellent video, audio, night vision, and Alexa integration, we get person detection and 30 days of cloud storage. If you’d like to use it, we’d recommend the Arlo Smart Video Doorbell because it includes cloud storage, which is what made the Arlo video doorbell so appealing.
